January 23 - “Satchmo Shines On” with Jan McDonald’s tribute to Louis Armstrong brings legendary music and an identifiable sound that energizes the room. I can't wait until you hear the mix (as I have, in rehearsal) of Jan McDonald's trumpet and cornet with Dave Anderson's clarinet, John Leisenring's trombone, Bert Dalton on piano and keyboard, Richard Snider on bass and tuba and Cal Haines on drums - wow! The concert will be jammed full with jubilant and sentimental tunes like "What A Wonderful World," "Mack The Knife" and "St. James Infirmary." Jan's arrangements really bring out the bright heart of the songs, and the group will debut his original composition, "If I Were Satchmo. "If you don't know much about Jan, he's been building up to this concert since he was 10 years old, when he first was turned on to Satchmo in Des Moines. Since then, he's dedicated his life to the study, teaching and performing of trumpet, amassing impressive awards and accompanying a bunch of other greats. His CD "Sweet" won Best Original Jazz Composition in the 2010 New Mexico Music Awards. He's dug up some of Armstrong's original charts dating back to 1918 from the Lincoln Center Library for this event. A labor of love that has taken years of hard work, "Satchmo Shines On" will share the wealth of Jan's passion for music that is an American treasure with all of us lucky enough to be in the audience.

February 6 - “Like Someone In Love” features local woodwind artist and educator Dave Anderson on soprano and tenor saxophones and flute. Dave has performed for 46 years in jazz, pop and classical ensembles, and with greats such as Ella Fitzgerald and Mel Torme. A concert of songs aimed at creating a sense of love and romance has long been Dave's heart's desire, and he has selected favorite tunes from The Great American Songbook for this pre-Valentine's warmup. Joining him is another musician we all love - guitar player and vocalist Pat Malone. Dave and Pat are pairing up for the first time in possibly decades for this sweet combo, backed by another great combination: Justin Bransford on upright and electric bass and Cal Haines on drums. Once we settle in to enjoy this dream-concert, we may never want to leave!
